Republic of Kenya (English) or Jamhuri ya Kenya (Swahili)
Kenya sits on the east coast of Africa on the Indian Ocean. Most Kenyans live in the highlands, where Nairobi, the capital, sits at an altitude of 1,000 meters.
While Kenyans speak primarily speak Swahili and English, there are more than 60 languages spoken there and they have more than 40 ethnic groups.
There are more than 50 reserves set up by the government protecting the animals of Kenya. Animals such as elephants, lions, cheetahs, giraffes, hippos, rhinos and many more.
While many of us think of Kenya as being all lowland savannah, it also includes deserts, swamps, mountain, and forest terrains.
Kenya became a republic, free of colonization from the United Kingdom, on December 12, 1964. This independence day celebrated in Kenya is called Jamhuri Day.
Scientists think that Northern Kenya and Tanzania may have been the original birth place of humans.
